How to Spot Radicalisation

Radicalisation is difficult to spot. Signs that may indicate a child is being radicalised include:

• Isolating away from friends & family
• Talking, as if from a scripted speech
• Unwilling or unable to discuss their own views
• A sudden disrespectful attitude towards others
• Increased anger
• Secretiveness, particularly around internet use

Extremists might target children who have low self-esteem or be victims of discrimination, and tell them they can be part of something special, later brainwashing them into cutting themselves off from their friends and family.

PREVENT

• PREVENT forms part of the government’s wider anti-terrorism strategy, CONTEST
• PREVENT is covered during your mandatory e-learning training, including signs to look out for
• The support focuses on re-direction to the individuals at risk, or who are in the process of being radicalised, before any crime is committed.
