The probation period
During your probation period we’ll induct you into your new role, train you on what you’ll need to know to be successful at Penrose Health, and support you to settle in with the rest of the team. Your Line Manager will also give you regular feedback on how you’re doing during this time, so that you can develop your skills from the start.
All of this should ideally give you a clear idea of the role and our expectations of you, build up your confidence in the role, help you to build relationships with your colleagues, and help to support you sooner rather than later if you have any concerns about your work.
Your probation period is not only a time for us to see whether we think you’re a good fit, it’s also a time for you to see whether you enjoy working with us as well.
Probation reviews
At intervals during your probation period and finally at the end, you’ll have formal probation reviews with your Line Manager. These meetings are to review and discuss your performance so far, and, in the case of the final review, to tell you the outcome of your probation period.
These meetings will broadly cover the following topics:
- Your self-evaluation - how well you feel that you are progressing in the role, and if you have any specific areas that you want to improve on, or goals to reach
- Quality of work - generally how well you’re able to carry out the demands of your role
- Time management - do you meet our productivity requirements, are punctual, and/or have had any attendance issues during your probation period
- Teamwork, engagement and fit - how well you get along with your colleagues, feel comfortable engaging with the team and making contributions
- Readiness to work independently - do you have a clear understanding of the role and expectations, have you received all of the necessary training, and do you have a good general attitude towards your role
Outcomes of the final probation review
There are broadly three possible outcomes from your final probation review:
- If you and your Line Manager are both happy with how your work is going you’ll pass probation, which means that the full obligations of your contract come into effect e.g. your full notice period
- If your Line Manager is not entirely happy with your work so far, but they see potential for you to improve, or they need more time to assess your performance, we may extend your probation period
- If your Line Manager is not happy with your performance, and they don’t think that there’s any room for improvement, you may fail your probation, which means that we will terminate your employment
The longer employee journey
Once you’ve passed your probation (woohoo!) we hope that you feel settled and able to get on with your work. You should still have regular contact with your Line Manager, but they’ll no longer be monitoring how you’re doing so closely.
You’ll still have Annual Performance Reviews (similar to your probation reviews), to check-in on how you’re performing at work, to let you know if there are any areas that we want you to work on, and for you to let us know if there are any areas that you want additional support to develop.
We’re committed to supporting your continuing professional development throughout your time with us, not just during your probation period. Have a look at our Learning & Development page to find out more.
