What is this service?
Slimming World gives GPs, nurses and other health professionals the opportunity to offer free membership of a local Slimming World group to those patients who they feel would benefit. Referred patients attend at no cost to themselves for an initial agreed period (in multiples of 12 weeks blocks).
This consists of weekly group weight management sessions plus additional support (telephone, buddy system and free online support) in between group meetings as required by individuals.
Criteria
NHS digital (online course): 12 weeks long
- >18 years old
- BMI >30 (or >27.5 for BAME patients)
- A current diagnosis of diabetes or hypertension
In-person workshops: 12 weeks long
- >18 years old
- BMI >30 (or >27.5 for BAME patients)
- Live or have a GP registered in Lewisham only

Rejections, DNAs & other Quirks
- A referral is only rejected if the patient doesn’t meet the NHS criteria (refer to criteria above)
- If a patient is rejected and is still keen on joining slimming world, they can still sign up as a paying member via the Slimming World website: https://www.slimmingworld.co.uk/health
