What is this service?
Primary Ophthalmic Solutions works with the South East London ICS with the aim of providing Optometrist Triage Service and Community Services across the area.
Community Services
Their website has a practice locator on the home page if you are looking for any the following:
- Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS)
- Post-op Cataract checks
- Subject to suitable clinical outcomes, this check can be done 4 to 6 weeks from the date of the operation by a community optician practice. Patients will be given details at the time of surgery.
- Children's Eye Screening
- Children are generally screened in reception at school. Those deemed suitable for the community service are referred to a local accredited optician for further detailed tests.
- Easy Eye Care Pathway
- This is a specialist eye care service for people with learning disabilities and autistic people of all ages. They offer: longer eye tests or multiple appointments; easy to understand reports; local optometrists and dispensing opticians who have had extra training.
Optometrist Triage Service
If you’re unsure whether your patient is suitable for the Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS) or if you think they need to be seen by an eye care specialist in secondary care, then refer to this service via eRS.
Criteria
- Any patient over 2 years old can be referred.

Rejections, DNAs & other Quirks
- When referring for Optometrist Triage Service:
- the service may need to contact the patient to arrange a hospital appointment, so ensure that (in eRS) the ‘Consent to Call Back’ option is recorded as ’Expressed Consent’.
- If you want to refer a patient to Moorfields, please call the direct line at 020 7521 4682 to discuss the case before sending them. Patients should not be sent without prior referral or discussion. Moorfields will only see patients who are geographically appropriate for their services.
