What is this service?
Specialist individualised hearing assessments to children with social communication disorders, including autistic spectrum disorder and other complex needs. This service includes:
- a child-friendly waiting room and specialised children's audiological booth
- modified hearing assessments which may include the use of familiar music or other sounds and familiar visual rewards
- the use of iPads/tablets for our hearing assessments
- speech testing, such as Ling Sounds, McCormick toy test and the Manchester Picture Test
Criteria

- Hummingbird Clinic referrals accepted from all professionals for children:
- who are undergoing social communication assessments
- who have a diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder
- for whom it is difficult to obtain reliable hearing thresholds
- who have complex needs
Related services:
- For children without ASD/complex needs: Paediatric Audiology (Evelina)
- If the child does not meet the above criteria they can be referred to a routine community clinic at Sunshine House (Southwark), Kaleidoscope (Lewisham) or Gracefield Gardens (Lambeth)

Rejections, DNAs & other Quirks
- All referrals will be triaged into the most appropriate clinic according to the information supplied by the referrer i.e. needs of the child, and wherever possible parent/carer is able to choose the clinic location most easily accessible to them
- Sunshine House (Southwark), Kaleidoscope (Lewisham) and Gracefield Gardens (Lambeth)
