Complicated vs uncomplicated UTIs
Pharmacy first will only be able to see ‘uncomplicated’ UTIs - those patients who have not had multiple UTIs recently, or who have no other symptoms from their UTI.
This is why we ask about recent UTIs in the past 6-12 months.
Female patients with UTIs
Pregnant patients with a urinary tract infection should be seen and managed by a medical professional, rather than pharmacy first.
Female patients who are currently menstruating, may have blood in their urine test. This can paint a complicated picture for our clinicians - so please ask any female patient if they are currently on their period, and note this down in the call history notes on EMIS.
Patients with a catheter
Patients with a catheter can experience more complications with regards to urinary tract infections. These patients should be triaged by a clinician sooner than non-catheterised patients.
