Zika virus is a blood borne infection usually transmitted through mosquitoes. The types of mosquitoes that carry Zika virus do not live in the UK (2025) so patients who are concerned about Zika virus will likely have a travel history.
Symptoms
The most common symptoms of Zika virus are headache, temperature, sore/red eyes, swollen joints, muscle pain and a rash over the body. Patients may have the Zika virus, but not develop any symptoms.
Pregnancy
Zika virus can harm an unborn baby, so pregnant people need to be reviewed and assessed if they develop Zika virus or have been to a high risk country. It is important to note that people with Zika virus may have no symptoms, but may still have the teratogenic effect.
