Testicular torsion
A rotated teste, also known as testicular torsion, is a medical emergency. It is more common in young adults/children. This occurs when the teste has rotated itself around it’s cord, which is obstructing the blood flow to the teste. It causes severe pain and swelling in the teste.
It must be seen urgently, and this needs to be done in a hospital setting as there is often emergency surgery required to treat it.
Testicular cancer
This is another cause of testicular pain and swelling that must be seen urgently. It is more common in young adults and should be assessed and diagnosed quickly as curative rates are very high.
STIs in Males
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can cause issues with both the penile and testicular region. This often presents with testicular swelling or pain, or rash/blisters and/or penile discharge. Some STIs are asymptomatic - they have no symptoms. It is important, especially for young adults, that anyone who may have been exposed to STIs is recommended to visit a sexual health clinic or perform self-testing.
