Acute seizure presentations to Primary Care via Reception team is fortunately uncommon. We have a number of questions in this pathway with the same outcome (999 / A&E) and this is to ensure we appropriately identify which patients need acute intervention in a hospital setting.
Aetiology
Seizures can be due to Epilepsy or they can be due to an underlying disease process like infection or electrolyte problems. Patients at higher risk include those with chronic kidney disease, on certain medications and liver failure patients.
Febrile convulsions
A febrile convulsion is a seizure due to a high temperature. This can occur in children who have a high temperature due to an infection. These children need to be assessed by a clinician; however, it is does not mean the child has Epilepsy and it is unlikely to cause harm or cause long-term effects.
