For Children
Reflux in babies occurs when stomach contents flow back up into the oesophagus. This may present through a variety of symptoms:
Spilling their milk: Frequent, often mild regurgitation of milk or formula after feeding.
Vomiting: More forceful and larger amounts compared to spitting up.
Irritability: Crying or fussiness, especially after feedings.
Feeding Issues: Difficulty feeding or refusing to eat.
Arching Back: Arching the back or clenching fists during or after feeding, which can indicate discomfort.
A health visitor can discuss feeding issues with parents. However, should the issues persist or if there are any red flags, we should see this babies to determine the issues.
For Adults
Reflux, often called heartburn, in adults is very common. Patients can source medications over the counter via their local pharmacy if they wish. Patients with red flags, should be seen by our surgery team sooner. This includes:
- Unexplained weight loss
- Consistent vomiting, especially if it looks like coffee grounds
- Food getting stuck in your throat or difficulty swallowing
