Allergic reaction emergencies
Allergic reactions can happen at any time. It is important to ensure that those having a severe reaction are seen by A&E/999 services as this can be life threatening.
Some of the symptoms they might be experiencing include:
- Rapid swelling of face, lips or tongue
- Wheezy or difficulty breathing
- Blue lips or tongue or mottled hands/feet
- New rash or hives
Medication or food allergies
All patients are susceptible to medication allergies or rashes due to medication. Often these medications will have been started by our team, or could have been prescribed by external colleagues. Our in-house pharmacy team are the best people to assess a medication allergy, and can consider alternatives to prescribe.
Children are more likely to experience allergies relating to new foods that they have tried. This can cause a range of reactions, from mild to severe allergic reactions. It is best that these children are seen by our team soon, to determine the next course of action.
